Is Asher Roth a Tool?

“Maturity is a bitter disappointment for which no remedy exists, unless laughter can be said to remedy anything.”

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

Q: Why are college guys acting like adolescent knuckleheads?

A: Because they can.

Wow. College guys are having such a good time! It’s hard to imagine that two generations ago college men were serious and earnest about beginning careers and falling in love with the girl of their dreams. Alcohol was more a social lubricant, less an excuse for returning to kindergarten.  Sex was usually linked to commitment. Friendships were important, but not bromantic.

What changed? Where have all the real men gone? (That’s a rhetorical question; no doubt scores of PhD students are writing dissertations on the topic as I write.)

Asher Roth’s mega hit I Love College is a tribute to frat boy antics. He’s raking it in and having an incredible ride. Vanity Fair featured this article about him:

Asher Roth Just Can’t Decide Between Women and Tuna Sandwiches

(I gotta say, that headline is just plain unfortunate. Any deliberate combining of women and tuna is ew. Don’t go there.)

I’ve also gotta disagree with any comparisons to Eminem, who was (is?) a great talent. I suspect Asher Roth would agree. I have a feeling this nice Jewish boy knows exactly what he is doing and laughing all the way to the bank. Not a bad way to party in your 20′s.

    Nice jewish boys are cute…

I hated college, and that was mostly because I never have understood 18-22 year olds.

I've always had a great respect for immaturity – but good immaturity – the kind that involves being silly and playing on swing sets and not the kind that incorporates 2 parts of acting like douchebag to 3 parts being drunk.

Today the Boston Globe ran an article about a game popular on college campuses called Humans vs. Zombies. It's basically a very elaborate form of tag involving hundreds of people. It sounds awesome! Sooo much fun. No douchebag behavior allowed.
