Gripping, Gratifying Glee

The best TV critic in the history of the world is Matthew Gilbert of the Boston Globe. No matter where you live you should read his stuff at boston.com if you want to know what’s worth watching. If Matthew Gilbert says it’s crap, it’s crap. If he says it’s awesome, it’s awesome. And his tastes are diverse -- though he’s approaching middle age, he’s a fan of Gossip Girl, for example.

He’s never steered me wrong yet, so a few months ago when he raved about the pilot episode of Glee, I took notice, despite the fact that I’m usually not a musicals kind of girl. I finally got around to watching that pilot last night — Fox showed it in advance of Season 1 starting next Wednesday night at 9. And oh boy, I’m in love. The show was witty, entertaining, even poignant. The musical highlights included the hometown struggling glee club laying down a great performance of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing, and a rival high school glee club performing Amy Winehouse’s Rehab. There are snippets of both in the trailer:

Now that I’ve plugged the show, which I really think you should make a point of watching, I have to just say that Matthew Morrison, who stars as the Spanish teacher who works to whip this sorry group into shape, is beyond adorable. I have the biggest celebrity crush on him, this guy is sooooo my type:

Sensitive and intelligent, his character has a nice big dose of femme in him. He’s married to a real pain in the ass, though, so here’s hoping that doesn’t work out.

C’mon, I know you’re busy, but there is ALWAYS room for one more excellent TV show, don’t you think?
